Valamis, Copernicus Climate Change Service and Wageningen Environmental Research Announce Strategic Partnership to Address Climate Change Impact

The ambition is to provide free learning services that will contribute to raise awareness of climate change related challenges and provide tools to make informed climate change adaptation decisions.

LONDON, 27 September 2018. Valamis and Wageningen Environmental Research announced today a strategic partnership to support the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The partnership will result in a free global learning service designed to educate users on utilizing C3S open data for the current climate change adaptation challenges.

The C3S User Learning Services offer free training on how to use the Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS). The goal of the partnership is to provide high quality training to those who need to use climate data and to create awareness on climate change.

Valamis, Wageningen Environmental Research and partners Wageningen University, Wageningen Academy, University of Leeds and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute will support C3S, provide students, researchers, knowledge purveyors, policymakers and public authorities with personalized learning services. The services assist users in leveraging information on climate change in order to make more informed climate change adaptation decisions regarding critical environmental legislation and policies.

“We are excited about the innovative cooperation with C3S and Wageningen Environmental Research. We believe that with access to authoritative climate data delivered in an engaging and personalized format thanks to Valamis’ learning environment and Wageningen’s training resources and course delivery, we can support those who have to make decision on issues related to impact of climate change,” said Janne Hietala, Chief Commercial Officer at Valamis, the technology provider for the C3S User Learning Services.

The initiative sets up learning services which include blended training events focusing on the use of C3S data. The training activities are managed by Wageningen Environmental Research and partners.

“To be involved in a project of such scale and importance is an honor. We look forward to the future, and the impact this collaboration will have on our environment for generations to come,” said Hietala.

About Copernicus and ECMWF

Copernicus is the European Commission’s flagship Earth observation programme. It delivers freely accessible operational data and information services which provide users with reliable and up-to-date information related to environmental issues. ECMWF is implementing the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). ECMWF is an independent intergovernmental organisation, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its 34 Member and Co-operating States. Academic and environmental institutions from across Europe, including national meteorological services, play an integral role in making Copernicus a success.
