How Motorsport UK digitalized compliance training
The national governing body for motorsport in the UK transformed training for over 10,000 volunteers through the Valamis LMS and Sport:80 CRM integration, creating a data-driven learning experience that enhances safety and compliance across the sport.
Background: Racing to win a safety-critical mission
Motorsport UK oversees more than 10,000 volunteer marshals and licensed officials who make racing possible, ensuring every event runs safely and fairly.
“Every marshal and steward does this out of love for the sport. They’re the unsung heroes behind every chequered flag,” said Sam Walker, Development Manager, Motorsport UK.
The challenge was unlike any corporate training environment. These volunteers complete compliance training out of passion, not obligation, so the experience had to be effortless, intuitive, and motivating.
“It’s a dangerous, and very public sport. Everyone’s a volunteer, so the process had to be simple — one click, straight in, get the learning done, and back to the track.”
Motorsport UK’s audience spans generations, from long-time members used to paper certificates and in-person seminars, to new recruits expecting modern, digital-first experiences. The goal was to keep it easy for the traditionalists while meeting the expectations of a web-native generation.
“We wanted to move fully online, but we couldn’t risk alienating people who’ve always done it differently. The platform had to feel natural, not another hurdle,” Walker added.
At the same time, growing operational safety and governance demands exposed limits in the old LMS — manual processes, paper forms, and little visibility of learning data.
“Our obligations as a governing body were growing. The only way forward was a fully digital, unified system that worked for everyone.”
The solution: Full throttle to 100% digital
Motorsport UK partnered with Valamis, a learning management system built for scalability and integration, to create a single digital hub for all volunteer training — fully connected to its membership and licensing operations.
This partnership formed a connected ecosystem in which compliance training, licensing, and data work together.
“Sport:80 already managed all member and licence data, the heart of our operations. We needed a learning platform that would sync seamlessly with it. Valamis made perfect sense.”

Key Valamis features and benefits
✔️ Learning paths: Structured, role-based pathways for each volunteer group.
✔️ CRM integration: Completions automatically trigger licence approval.
✔️ Audience provisioning: Each learner sees only what’s relevant to them.
✔️ Mandatory assessments: 2,000+ licensed officials refresh their knowledge annually.
✔️ Analytics and governance: Insight into completions, assessments, and emerging knowledge gaps.
“SSO was a huge requirement. There’s no onboarding for our Learning Hub, so there could be no login barriers. Volunteers click once, complete their learning, and their licence releases automatically — that’s a real win.”
Building the track: Implementation in motion
The rollout was a true collaboration across all three companies, with weekly meetings to fine-tune integration, data flows, and the learner experience. As Sam Walker put it:
“It really was a team effort, Valamis and Sport:80 worked brilliantly together. It wasn’t just a technical integration — it felt like a shared goal to get this right for our volunteers.”
A key priority was giving Motorsport UK full autonomy to manage and update learning content in-house. With Valamis, our team can now upload SCORM files, update homepages, and launch new modules instantly, no vendor dependency, no delays.
“We’re too reactionary as a sport to go through a vendor every time a change is required,” Sam added. “Valamis gives us that autonomy.”
The partnership with Valamis has delivered measurable impact across every dimension, from scale to safety assurance.
- Engagement: “We don’t have to push them. People just go in, do the training, and get their license. Between five and seven people register as marshals every day, with no promotion or reminders. It’s that easy.”
- Consistency and compliance: “For safety-critical content, we need black-and-white assurance. Now, we finally know that every person receives the exact same training, and the data proves it.”
- Governance through data: Assessment results now feed directly into future training design, helping Motorsport UK pinpoint knowledge gaps, strengthen compliance, and maintain full audit transparency. Every completion and update is automatically recorded, creating a complete, auditable trail across all roles and events.
“We’ve never had this depth of understanding before. We can see exactly where the gaps are, prove compliance instantly, and adapt our content to keep people safe. That’s what great governance looks like to us.”
The next lap: Driving continuous improvement
Motorsport UK’s digital learning journey is far from finished. The next phase includes expanding training for rescue and extrication crews and adding new community features to the Valamis-powered hub.
- Expanding online training for rescue and extrication crews
- New modules on EV awareness and modern vehicle construction — vital skills for the next generation of safety specialists.
New engagement tools:
- Webinars for live learning and community connection
- Events calendars to keep volunteers informed
- New learning pathways to support evolving safety and governance requirements
“Transformative is the word. And the truth is, we’ve only just scratched the surface. We want to take this platform as far as it can go and make the most of everything it offers.”
